Freelancing is a great way to earn some extra money or even begin the stages of starting your own business. However, many people enjoy freelancing and are able to turn it into a full-on business bringing in consistent income! No matter what you decide to do with freelancing, there are a few things you should know before you start.
Clients Won’t Just Come To You
One of the first things I tell my freelancing students is that clients will not just come to you once you start a freelancing business. The only time this happens is when you’ve probably already told someone close to you about your new freelance business. But, you don’t want to rely on that.
In order to bring clients to you, you need to really put yourself out there, network, get involved on social media, and promote your services. All of these are free and easy to do. My suggestion is to first understand the types of clients you want to work with and then go find them. Odds are, your clients are on social media, so that’s a great place to start.
You Need to Learn to Sell
Look, nobody expects you to be the best saleswoman to ever exist, but you do need to learn how to get your point across, establish value, and be comfortable sharing prices with potential clients. I know for me personally, I didn’t spend a whole lot of time on that in the beginning and I probably missed out on tens of thousands of dollars. Some great places to find selling tips are on social media.
Patience is Key
We’ve all probably been told how important patience is right? Well, hate to break it to you but this couldn’t be more true when trying to get into a new realm whether it’s freelancing or anything else.
Patience is going to be your best friend when getting into freelancing because there is a lot of work that goes into it. You need to take time to learn your skills, get your profile set up, gather testimonials, and formulate your service offerings. But you know what? All of that work pays off in the end when you’re making the big bucks!
Practice Makes Perfect
The last thing I’m leaving with you today is that practice makes perfect. You’re going to need to perfect your freelance skills, as well as perfecting your sales skills. After all, nobody is going to sell your services for you! I also highly recommend you either hire someone to help with your social media or taking some free courses on how to do make some quality images.
